Our passport to history

We have travelled through time over the years concentrating on the Ancients and using several formats to achieve this.
We have taken a fairly relaxed approach this year.
Mater amabilis started our Journey with both Egpyt and Greece.

History Links was our choice for Rome as well as Famous men of Rome.
So we used a little of everything as well.
We have always incorporated Living books and picture books and craft activities into the equation as well.
This year we began Medieval History. I have researched various websites and books and I decided on a variety again.
So this time we will use Seton Our Catholic Legacy and Famous men of the middle ages together. bouncing of each other. Several living books here and here.
We are Blessed to know several families who have lent us resources.
We have raided the library, and we have begun our new journey into the Middle Ages.

We are looking at Art Music, food, Culture, Housing, People, and of course the Saints. 

We like to do a lot of our reading on the lounge with the maps and google earth close by, so we can zoom in on areas we are studying. We tend to walk along the streets and take in scenery,  if our passport, google maps, allows us to.  


Its beginning to unfold quite nicely.

WE stopped off our journey. late last year  for a while to visit Early American Indians as above shows.

American Indians -part 3

The last 3 weeks Brid has been researching and reading about American Indians. The last part of her project was to complete a report. Here is the link to my post on the lesson plan. Brid not only did this project solo, but typed every word and made the typed word fit and match the shape of the image. 

Brid has learnt about Blessed Kateri Tekawitha and St Isaac, and we have added them both to our All Saints Poster.

ROME Topic Approach

Week 5 has seen the coming of the close of our study of Rome, its Kingdom, Its Republic and Its Empire. It has been a long journey, but very fruitful.
We used History Links as our main source and bounced of here and there using the references it suggested, and as my usual style, the books I knew we had in our library to embellish each area as needed. History Links has 3 bound books presenting Rome from its beginnings to its fall.
It covered the Saints of the time, the beginnings of our early church and the heresies at the time. It placed emphasis on our Church Fathers and the rulers of the Roman Empire.
We learnt about Vestments and Sacraments within this unit. Iconography was discussed and we could practice what we learnt on other Icons we knew.
We were able to end this amazing time in history this week because we implemented the topic approach. As I stated last week, we can gain momentum, and stay with it, rather than swapping to a new subject several times a day.

So why was this imporrtant to complete?
We were both feeling we had journeyed enough with this unit. It is a very full unit, and I culled what I knew was information that would just go over Brids' head. This made it more manageable and wothwhile.
So tomorrow brings a new day and new adventures.

Our journey in NSW

What a journey this has been. It has been lots of fun looking at landmarks and places we have visited. Such places as Sights in Sydney, the Hunter river, Blue Mountains, Fitzroy Falls, Goulburn. Brid is reviewing NSW this week and has enjoyed her discoveries.

Our favourite book is My Place- Nadia Wheatley The best part about it is just travelling in the same area and watching it grow, and then discovering that it was the place WYD08 held many of its events in that week. I volunteered for this week, and as I was stationed at Barangaroo, I got to see it fairly empty in the mornings @ 8am or so.

We were both very delighted to be able to google this area of Barangaroo, and to see the 'Big Tree', still growing. It was the landmark that positioned us, the reader, in every new decade and page that Nadia took us too.

I have been stressing. I don't know why, maybe the mess up in the middle of the year. I have not completed the History work I wanted to for the year. My expectations Only. Brid is going great guns.
So I now have a plan and I feel under control again- what did I just say, that word control. I need to let go and let God. He has it all in hand, not me.
